We have made a few changes lately, one of those being cycling out of chickens for egg production and now we will only have larger & yummier duck eggs available. Around July/August of 2023 our girls should begin laying their first couple of eggs and swing into full production by the end of the year.

Looking at our little plot of land, we had to contemplate the best animals and uses of the space available to us. Having had chicken eggs and finally spending time tasting different varieties of duck eggs, we settled with two varieties that would meet our production rate and had a flavor we loved.

But there’s other benefits to switching to ducks! Ducks don’t scratch the ground as much as chickens do, a single chicken came tear up a very large area searching for bugs to eat, enough so you spend most of your time repairing the soil they just tore up! Ducks, are great for insect control without the side effect of tearing into the soil or damaging crops. And honestly they’re just cuter and more relaxing to be around.

Aside from the maintenance and flavor, the nutritional value these ducks offer with their eggs is incomparable to the chicken eggs we once had. The size of each egg alone is enough to make a single egg breakfast filling, but there’s also the fact that chicken eggs have a higher water content than do duck eggs. There’s a difference in the proteins and antioxidants contained in each egg. The higher yolk to white ration means more nutrients per egg than that of chickens and if you happen to be allergic to chicken eggs, duck eggs are an excellent alternative for many due to the different proteins in duck eggs. They also remain fresher, longer, due to the thicker shell. If you really want to know more, Google Duck Eggs vs Chicken Eggs and read for yourself!
